GJ REPORT: JE SUOIS TZIGANE

Lots of musical freshness, quick mouthness and full measure of humour - that sums up two concerts of excellent roma group Kal, held in Ljubljana at the beginning of this week.
Visitors, who did not know this gruop of seven well, were surprised for sure. It is certainly not a typical gipsy brass band who would only play traditional gipsy hits. Not that they don't play any of them, but they spice it up Kal style and mix with jazz, tango, even rock'n'roll rhythms.
The singer Dragan Ristić is the leader of this merry gang, but he is not the only one who glittered with his vocal inserts. The percusionist Aleksandar Radojićić and the others also prooved themself, not only in singing but also in joke-telling.
During the concert, which was - for some people unnecessary - played in two parts, we heard songs like James Rom (secret agent 007 parody), Romosom, hit song Mozzarela, featured on many compilations, as well as some new songs, like Liza and Prater.
While the first concert took place at the completely full garden of ethno club Zlati zob, organisers decided to bring it in the second night, to avoid the often visits by the police.
It was actually a baptism of the hall, which in not really finished yet, but at least the very (non) tolerant neighbours could sleep in peace.
Despite the improvised scene, Tuesdays concert was a real delight. Not as many people showed up, but that just gave the concert a touch of intimacy. The sound was better and the band was satisfied to be able to play the concert in full (on Monday the police interrupted it before).
The group is already touring in Sweden right now, and is very busy with the new album, which is supposed to see the light of day in October. A month later, we will hopefuly see them in Ljubljana again.

GJ REPORT: I AM ROM, JAMES ROM

Men in Black invaded Zlati zob yesterday evening. Gipsy group Kal made sure the party was best since this ethno club openned and the terrace of Zlati zob was almost to small for everybody who wanted to see maestros in action.
The band seemed on speed from the moment they showed up on stage, and at first bashful audience soon followed, so lots of dancing, clapping hands and singing was going on, and the energy was explosive!
The concert unfortunatelly ended a bit earlier than planned - for that we get to thank nice and tolerant neighbours, who were calling the police every five minutes, even though the whole thing was supposed to end at eleven p.m. anyway?! Obviously some people enjoy the sleepy, boring metropolis more than eventfull, urban city...
The band itself was almost more dissapointed about the unfortunate course of events than the audience and the organisers are doing everything, that today this kind on incidents wouldn't happen.
Yes, you read it right! There is another concert at the same place and the same time going on today! And since the guys still have some aces up their sleeves, it would be a shame missing it! See you there!

PS: We are preparing a detailed report about the concert itself and will publish it tomorrow...

GJ REPORT: TUTTI FRUTTI FRIDAY

A bit of gipsy, a bit of ragga, a bit of flamenco, a bit of dub, a bit of jungle, a bit of drum'n'bass, even a bit of turbo folk star like Ceca...those are the ingridients DJane Elza from Zagreb (Croatia) used to cook up an evening, full of dance and good energy. In the public oppinion the most good looking DJ, we hosted till now, prooved, she is good at mixtable, even if she conciders DJ-ing just a hobby and the mixtable gives her a hard time.

With an unusual music choice she shocked the audience a bit, but in a good way. Even the guests who aren't that fond of ethno music found their costs repaid with an electronic closure of another night at Zlati zob.

The members of our team, who just returned from a well deserved vacation, recorded her set, and you can hear a part of it in our GJ player. Enjoy!

KAL IN DOUBLE CONCERT

A year has passed, and Kal has finally decided to pay us another visit. A very special and quite intimate two concerts are going to take place in the shelter of Zlati zob.

Who are we talking about? Urban gipsy attraction Kal is one of the hottest and inovative gipsy groups from Belgrade, Serbia. Currently no one acts as a more forthright guide through this mess of history, myths, traditions, prejudice and community pride than Kal. It is a young band, rock'n'roll in attitude, fuelled on dance beats and rooted in the Balkan blues.

Kal (black in roma language) was formed by brothers Dušan and Dragan Ristić, to confront the prejudices and clichés to often connected with Roma people. This was their way of continuing their fathers - first Roma teacher to graduate from teachers college - work. That is how new gipsy music was brought to life . a mixture of tradicional gipsy and urban music, which despite it's modern sound avoids the use of electronic keyboard. For Dragan Ristić those are electronic keyboards are the curse upon Balkan music.

For the second album, titled simply Kal, the group co-operated with one and only 'world mega tsar' Rambo Amadeus, their song or remixes are a frequent 'guests' on many gipsy&balkan compilations all over the globe (Balkanbeats, Nuit Tzigane, Gipsy Beats and Balkan Bangers, Serbia Sounds Underground...). The album itself brought the group big success. In 2007 Kal was the third on the World Music Charts Europe, formed by the 50 DJ's of all European eminent radio stations, such as BBC, Radio Nova Paris, WDR... The grop outpassed great names of world music like Gotan Project, Salif Keita and Natacha Atlas.

This time the group will also present the new material, which is going to see the light of day this fall.

Dragan Ristić (quitar, vocal)
Dragan Mitrović (accordion)
Vladan Mitrović (accordion, vocal)
Djordje Belkić (violin)
Aleksandar Cvejić (electric bass)
Goran Savič (drums)
Aleksandar Radojicic (percussions)

GJ REPORT: STONER ROCKED ZLATI ZOB

Lots of dancing was going on in Zlati zob last Saturday, when DJ Stoner from Trieste payed us another visit. His outdoor/indoor Balkanparty stired up the lazy summer Ljubjana atmosphere and the visitors of Zlati zob approved it by dancing. At some point, it looked like it would all be prepared in advance, with Aysha & her tribal dancers doing their thing, which was all together improvised, but looked like a devilishly good choreography. From old school gipsy music to fresh and 'have to move your feet to this beat' original remixes, Stoner once again proved us, he knows exactly what he is doing and he is doing it well! Untill next time comrade!

GJ PRESENTS: DJane ELZA BURNS ZLATI ZOB

A manager (Picikato brass band; Macedonia), director, producer, a girl of enviable figure and praising musical knowledge, one of the Zagreb world/gipsy music pioneers....all of that is DJane Elza.

She was one of the first to play this kind of music in Croatia, but her spirit is too big to restrict itself to one country only. Together with Haris Pilton she rocked Italy at Loiano Balkan Festival in Bologna, and also presented herself to Slovene audience.

In this second strike, she will take us to her unique journey of reagge, dub, break beat, jungle, gypsy punk music. Rhythms so hot, it burns, literally...Wander why she just got a nickname Burning Elza? Ask her yourself on Friday at Zlati Zob.
