GJ REPORT: PANCAKES AND OTHER GOODIES

Photo: Špela Škulj

Last Friday was a day for agroreggae and Panonnian surf-pop from the banks of river Danube. The incredibly positive sounds were brought to us by Drum'n'zez.
Although their album sounds kind of popish, the guys and the girls really surprised us live.
We were swaying to reggae rhythms, jumping on ska music, shaking our hips to the remake of the famous Gipsy hit Fato mori dušmanke. One big pot of good vibes all together!
Audience in Škofja Loka and Ljubljana surprisingly new the band and sung along, when the band was playing it's hit songs Palačinka (pancake) and Dunav.
We hope to see the guys on a stage near us soon again. In the meantime check out the sound, video and photo material Gipsy Jungle team has gathered for you... Enjoy!

GIPSY JUNGLE RECOMMENDS: DRUM'N'ZEZ

If you are in need of some fresh and new sounds, Drum'n'zez are offering just that. The band is coming from Novi Sad, Serbia and is bringing us a fusion of many music styles and influences but mostly reggae, world music, dub, pop and even some ethno sounds from their surroundings.
They have come a long way from playing at the banks of river Danube in 1997. Last year they took part in Serbian contest for the Eurovision with their hit-single Dunav and made a great success. The performance brought them a chance to release an album for the biggest national label PGP. They are promoting “Dunava ukus” since, and proudly presenting their self-invented musical genre panonnian surf-pop. Some ska moments and funny lyrics make their gigs very cheerful and interactive. All in all, they have the recipe for joy and love…
The guys will be joined by DJ Tito after the concert, so the night of joy, love and good music can continue till the morning hours...

DUNKELBUNT IN THE HOUSE

Dunkelbunt alias Ulf Lindemann is a man of all trades. A pianist, composer, producer, DJ and radio editor. Dunkelbunt also contributed a lot to the promotion of the urban Gipsy rhythms in Vienna with his Balkan Hot Step evenings.
When he is not mixing his special spice mixes, he is performing all over Europe, and also in Turkey and United states. He has been a guest of prominent festivals such as Danish Roskilde and Spanish Etnosur.
After a journey that led him from Vienna to Istanbul, he has released the album Morgenlandfahrt; a mix of Dub, Reggae, Bossa, Jazz, Electronics, Trip Hop and Break Beats woven with a Balkan twist. Numerous co-operations with both Viennese and international musicians have enriched many racks of the album, from Fanfare Ciocarlia, Amsterdam Klezmer band to MC Killo Killo and Orient Expressions.
Now he has finally decided to stop in Ljubljana, where he will share the stage with DJ Tito. On his visit he will present the brand new tunes from Sun Dub compilation, which is to be released any day now. Sunny music for sunny days!

GJ REPORT: BALKANBEATS LONDON

Last  Saturday night DJ Malaka, who happens to be our western neighbour, organized restarting BalkanBeats London night which took place in a London's new underground venue Passing Clouds. We could not resist checking it out!

The night sat off with Forty Thieves Orkestar who played Balkan-gypsy. When Alejandro Toledo and the Magic Tombolinos played their Gypsy-Ethno nu Style music the place filled up so much that we could hardly move and dancing was almost impossible. The real dancing party started with BalkanBeats' Robert Soko DJ set that really  spirited us away. With last but not least, DJ Malaka performing DJ set voyage from traditional to gypsy jungle, the night of Gypsy, Klezmer, Balkan, Roma, Tzigan, Russian Ska, Serbian Breakz, Croatian Turbo Folk, Oriental Music and off course dance, was accomplished!

In short, music was great, the venue was full, people were happy and dancy! Besides, it's nice to see »Balkan spirit« overtaking the London!
