Soo, last week was quite full of etno-electronical parties in Ljubljana and the surroundigs. We checked out two of them. First one was the fist Balkanbeats evening in Kino Šiška. Not bad, not bad at all! Ok, the place is rather sterile, and the smell in in is quite nasty, but when crowded and with good music coming out of the speakers, you kind of forget you are in the congress hall. What also helped break the sterility of the place were great, original, sometimes quite provocative visualisations, taken care of by VJ Aga. The DJ star guest of the evening was Robert Šoko, the founder of the Balkanbeats movement all over Europe. He played greatest Balkanbeats hits kind of set. The host of the evening Haris Pilton prepared a more electronic set, with his own dirty gipsy surf (and lots of other stuff) style remixes. Very nice all together!
On the other hand, Friday evening was quite a disappointment for the author of this report. That's what you get, when your expectations are too high. Kiril Džajkovski, who I saw playing a wicked concert two years ago on the Exit festival in Novi Sad (Serbia), came on stage with an hour of delay, which was not very nice. But ok, he's a star, let him have it... If he would at least play a good concert. Not that it was bad all together. The start was very energetic, danceable, very gipsy jungle. But after around twenty minutes Kiril decided to go into more house waters. And the brass section decided or was told to take a little break. So you have people who payed 26 euros, and are now watching a DJ on his two macs playing more or less house beats.... Pleaseeee! We can do that for far less money. Ok, the excellent percusion section helped a bit, while the guitar was kind of unnecessary. Big up for the drum'n'brass section though. They were really the one filling the crowd with energy. MC Ras Tweed also did his part of the job. On some occasions not as fast and furios as the crazy MC Gaea, that accopmanied Kiril on his previous tours. But nice anyway. The highlights of the evening were of course two hits; Jungle Shadow and the fresh Raise up your hands. We heard both of the songs twice, well the last one actually three times (one of them was kind of dub version) in twenty minutes. He's very lucky this are really, really good songs... What to say? It was a concert where the group tried to mix all possible styles in too little time. And if you expected really a lot, you might have been a pit pissed of after the concert. The majority of people seamed to like it though. So, maybe it just me. But I know for sure, next time Kiril is in town, I'll rather skip it!
