GJ REPORT: TRIPY HOPY VELAHAVLE

For the last of the three autumn KUD-Gipsy Jungle concerts on Wednesday we were treated to a lot of new material from the eclectic Bosnian group Velahavle. Having heard about the direction of their recent work, I was expecting something unique, dynamic and chilled out - just totally not ready to get hit with such a powerful opener... Ok then. Not entirely conventional, not exactly electronic, Velahavle delivered an organic dub/trip-hop feel, dipping into some dub-step intensity now and then. Whether more or less vocal, or hard or soft, everything was pinned down in a deep groove.
As the show unfolded, its electronic orientation became clear; while the bassist and guitarist were only intermittently engaged, the drummer was in a wicked-tasty conversation with the mixing DJ throughout the show. I'm rarely one to focus much on vocals but was seriously impressed with the presence of Samir Hodović voice live. Unfortunately there wasn't too much of a crowd - don't know if it was the weather, not enough promotion, entrance or many other events - it cast a bit of a cloud on the overall ambient of the show, making the band-audience engagement a bit awkward. Nevertheless, everyone there was 'all in' and ready for some fun, so we warmed up and got to dig a really cool show.
Everybody tha missed it, can tune in to Gipsy Jungle player and check it out!

GJ PRESENTS: VELAHAVLE (BiH)

Last but not least in the autumn trio is the Sarajevo based band Velahavle. It's music is a blend of trip-hop and other broken rhythms, backed-up with a bit of ethnic sounds. They have caught attention of the audience already with it's first single Cosanostra (1999). In March 2005, the first album Reconnect was released. Among others it involved a colaboration wit a great Bulgarian singer Kashova Ralitsa. Production was done by the renowned UK drum'n'bass producer Kemal Okan (aka Konflict). In recent months, the band started working on a new album, recorded in a Dub Step, Drum'n' bass, Garage and Trip Hop manner. Velahavle will present it exclusively at the concert in Slovenia!

Wednesday, 7. 12. 2011 KUD FRANCE PREŠEREN 21:00, entrance: 8 €

GJ REPORT: FUNKY DIRTY SANCHEZ

Dirty Sanchez. With a name like that, you have to be in the market for a little funky-nasty. Billed as a sort of ethno-funk this collection of familiar and enjoyable musicians on the Ljubljana scene usually stays on the funky side of that equation - probably for the best. The concert opened with a typically funky song featuring Aleksander Kuzmić on a harmonium-accordion type instrument that I was sad not to see come out again, even though his style on guitar fit the rest of their repertoire perfectly. From that point on they altered the pace and sentiment of the songs asserting their own groovy takes on many familiar classics from around the Mediterranean and beyond. Keeping the audience engaged between songs was the tireless and amusingly vocal bass player Jeiro Enrique Benitez Habib, frequently bringing the on-stage conversation to the crowd. Otherwise, the saxophonist and violinist, Jaka Birsa and Petra "Fu" Onderufova alternating parts or backing each other, kept the atmosphere warm if not smokin' while the percussionist Marko Sikirica on various bongos laid down some playful, trippy rhythms. What was really impressive was how accessible and fun the show was to different tastes, given the diversity of the tunes, which really highlighted how well this group works together.
